Costa Rica’s Caribbean Side: Why You Should Choose the Caribbean Coast

When planning a trip to Costa Rica without a set itinerary and limited time, you may wonder which of the two coastlines to choose for your vacation. In my opinion, the Caribbean coast is the better choice if you prefer to encounter wildlife during a beach stroll rather than searching for animals in national parks. It’s also ideal if you’re looking for safe swimming spots with calm waves and a vibrant nightlife, all in one place, without having to travel far.

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca—a small town on the shores of the Caribbean Sea—is the perfect fit. But let’s break it down in more detail.

Why Visit Puerto Viejo?

Puerto Viejo is a small town located near the Limón district, the capital city and main hub of Limón Province. It seems to be one of the only truly tourist-friendly spots on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast where you can fully relax. The town is packed with a wide variety of restaurants and cafes catering to all tastes, and the vibe is completely different from what you’d experience on the Pacific coast. Here, you’ll truly immerse yourself in the Pura Vida lifestyle.

The sounds of music fill the air, especially in the evening, when the main street comes alive, attracting all the vacationers staying in Puerto Viejo.

Where to Stay in Puerto Viejo

While you won’t find as many accommodation options here as on the Pacific side, the choices are more modest and cozy. Most of the lodging consists of small bungalows or hostels, ideal for young people who come here to freelance by the sea.

Here are two highly recommended Airbnb options:

  1. Modern container house with a huge terrace, located near Playa Negro. It’s about a 10–15 minute walk along the road. I was a bit hesitant about staying in a converted container, but it turned out to be very comfortable. The terrace with the open kitchen was a delight.
  2. Small bungalow just 300 meters from the beach. This is a great option if you want to be within walking distance of the shoreline.

Best Beaches Near Puerto Viejo

Several stunning beaches are located near Puerto Viejo, and most of them are perfect for swimming, with clean and calm waters. My two favorites are:

  • Playa Negro: A charming beach with black volcanic sand and gentle, silvery waves. It’s a great spot for swimming with kids, and you’ll rarely find large crowds here. The atmosphere is peaceful and serene. Both of these beach recommendations are located outside the main part of Puerto Viejo, so having some form of transportation—whether a car, bike, or motorcycle—will make getting around easier, as both spots are a bit removed from the town center.
  • Playa Cocles: A classic beach with white sand and turquoise waves. It’s a large, beautiful beach, although the waves can occasionally be a bit stronger, but it’s still great for swimming. Along the shore, there’s a long path through the trees, perfect for a leisurely walk while spotting wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled—sloths sit in nearly every tree! With a little patience, you’ll soon become an expert at spotting them in the foliage. The area is also home to many monkeys, raccoons, crabs, squirrels, and other creatures that are harder to find on the Pacific side.

What to Do in Puerto Viejo

If you want a closer look at the animals, I highly recommend visiting the Jaguar Rescue Center—a wonderful place dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating wild animals. It’s a great experience for both adults and children. The tours are conducted in various languages, and the guides provide in-depth information about all the animals being cared for at the center.

Explore Cahuita National Park

About a 30-minute drive away, you’ll find Parque Nacional Cahuita, perfect for those who want a longer hike. The park is well-maintained, and you can comfortably walk through it, even in light shoes, thanks to the wooden boardwalk that runs through the jungle. Along the way, you’ll spot monkeys, raccoons, and other park residents.

At the end of the trail, you’ll find a beach where you can take a refreshing dip. Be sure to bring snacks, as there are no stores or cafes inside the park.

Where to Eat in Puerto Viejo

While you’ll easily find the national Caribbean seafood soup in any cafe with a “Caribbean food” sign, I’ll share a tip on where to get a fantastic burrito. Head over to Tasty Waves Cantina. They serve not only delicious burritos but also top-notch tacos. It’s also a fun spot if you’re in the mood for lively company.

That’s all for now! Have an amazing trip, and enjoy everything that Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast has to offer.
